SIERRA FRANKLIN
VISUAL ARTIST
Born in Chicago, IL, Sierra Franklin was destined to be great. She started dancing way before she was even BORN. Yup...You heard that right! She quotes "My mother would play music around her stomach and that's when the dancing started. I was maybe around 6 months old" She may love dance, but there's honestly no limit to the abilities Sierra has! Sierra is an all around visual artist. We got a chance to sit down with her last week and chat it up. Here's how that went:

INTERVIEW W/ SIERRA FRANKLIN
WRITTEN BY KANASI SUGAR
KS: Hey, Sierra! I'm so glad we got a chance to sit down with you. I want to take it all the way back actually. Sort of get to know Sierra in the early stages. When did you start creating things?
SF: "Well I can start with dancing, I've been honestly dancing since before I was born!'
KS: What!? What do you mean?
SF: "My mother would play music in her headphones around her stomach and that's when the dancing started. I was maybe around 6 months old. I was also the kid that would dance at the family events and the rest was history!"
KS: So you've literally been dancing forever *Chuckles*
SF: Yes *Laughs*
KS: Did you pursue dancing in high school?
SF: I was teaching dance for about 5-10 years at church. I stopped doing that around my sophomore year in high school. Oh, wait! I also did ballet in elementary school. I think I did more dancing in elementary school. I then started dancing with a company called "Red Clay Dance Company".
KS: WOW! So what type of dancing were you most into?
SF: I was mostly into modern style dancing.
KS: So, I want to switch gears and talk about cannabis. *Laughs* Most of the people who I've interviewed that were into the arts all started experimenting with weed in like their teenage years. Was it the same for you?
SF: Yes, well I had a previous boyfriend who was basically the person I was smoking with. I wasn't buying it, but he was! I remember I smoked a Backwood the day before my high school graduation. I was supposed to sing and everything and I was really messed up. So yeah, I started in high school.
KS: Were you knowledgeable about strains or anything or was it just specifically for getting high?
SF: I knew there was Loud, and I knew there was Reggie, *Laughs* but because I wasn't buying it myself, I knew he wasn't getting Reggie.
KS: That makes sense, that makes sense. Do you use cannabis while you are working or are you more of a sober creator? Also, did you think to incorporate cannabis into your art early on, or is it a newer idea that you're exploring?
SF: My art is made best when I'm not thinking about ANYTHING. I'm really just flowing most of the time. Most of what I like to make, has to do with plants. Like plant accessories, and little trinkets to sit on them. When it comes to my smoking related items, I don't go into it thinking about "How can I make an ashtray?" I sort of just start working then at the end say "This is an ashtray!" I also want to make things for women to make smoking feel a little more feminine. You don't see too many light ashtrays. Most of them are tin and not very cute. I like that when I make art, they can be used to help with smoking, but they can also be light and more artsy than your regular smoking materials.
KS: Wow! Just...Wow! That sounds so awesome! I feel like we need more people within the cannabis industry like you. People that are going to brighten up the space. So I'm curious, Sierra. What do you have coming up next? Anything you can share?
SF: Well I have a Tiktok page of me playing games on my phone. Right now my favorite game is Zen Match! (Not Sponsored) I'm making more clay items, I'll be posting them on a separate Instagram dedicated for my art. Ummmm. That's about it. It was so nice sitting down with you guys! Oh wait! Follow me on Instagram @sierraerra.nic and @shooting.star.co
KS: No, Thank you! I enjoyed getting to know you and hope you come back soon!
SF: Thank you SO MUCH!
